at the time, a congressman named steve stockman, even wrote in an article in "guns & ammo" magazine that waco was a government execution. he said, "waco was supposed to be a way for the bureau of alcohol, tobacco and firearms and the clinton administration to prove the need for a ban on so-called assault weapons." this was a member of congress arguing that the deaths at waco were premeditated by the government as a way to persuade the rest of the country to support gun control. he was saying the government made this up, they did this on purpose, they ginned this up for political reasons, it was planned. ruby ridge had been a cause celebre for folks like that already that year. waco was a further cause celebre for the same group of people. and on the anniversary of waco, on the two-year anniversary of waco, on april 19th, 1995, a militia member named timothy mcveigh cited ruby ridge and waco as his inspiration for bombing the federal building in oklahoma city. timothy mcveigh was trying to kill as many federal employees as possible when he bombed that building. he specifically chose the murrah

. a newly elected crazy republican congressman, steve stockman issued a press release about impeaching the president if he issues executive orders involving firearms. the best you could say about stockman is that he issued an idiotic press release in order to get national media attention, otherwise, how would anyone know he is a congressman, again? he served one two-year term back in the '90s. the worst you could say about stockman is he issued an idiotic press release because he believes every word of the press release. another texas republican, state legislator steve toth is proposing legislation that would make any federal law banning semiautomatic firearms or limiting the size of gun magazines unenforceable in texas. his proposed firearm protection act would make it a felony to enforce a federal assault weapons ban in texas. so he would be sending out texas rangers to arrest fbi agents or atf agents or anyone who tried to enforce such a federal law. this of course, could never happen. and is patently unconstitutional. and again, the best thing that can be said about steve toth is t

we're at this breaking point. >> clinton era conspiracy they'rist and texas republican steve stockman first loaded impeachment earlier this week saying "if the president is allowed to suspend constitutional rights on his own personal whims, our free republic has effectively creased to exist." dana milbank writes in the washington post that stockman was once considered too radical for congress, which is why he only served one term in the mid 1990s, but he is not too crazy for this congress. as milbank notes, "what's frightening is that stockman no longer sounds like an outliar." with reactionary statements that seem at times unhinged from reality, congressman stockman fits in just fine. >> our founding fathers were very concerned about having a separation of powers. they didn't want to let the president become a king. >> i'm afraud that president obama may have this king complex sort of developing, and we're going to make sure it doesn't happen. >> maria theresa, it's like, you know, i feel like i -- we played a little bit of sound from rachel maddow last night, my distinguished collea

this congressman, steve stockman, of texas to threat be impeachment if the president pursues any infringement of gun rights. edwin meese is the late toast jump on that bandwagon. as the president has said many times, he believes in the second amendment, right to bear arms, and has no desire to limit the rights of responsible gun owners. but how can he do nothing and answer to the families of 20 children and 6 school staffers riddled with bullets? how can he answer the parents of slain 6-year-old ben wheeler who spoke with my colleague rachel madd ow on monday. >> just, just don't stop think being this. just keep thinking about this. keep this in your head. >> my dad would always say ben is going to do amazing things, and i always say now, i just didn't know it was going to be in his death. i thought it was going to be in his life. >> those are the people whom the president has to answer to today, tomorrow, and every day. joining us now is congressman john larson, democrat of connecticut. good afternoon, sir. >> good afternoon, martin. >> mr. larson, i have been struck by your public comments

from the right, where republican congressman steve stockman of texas is already throwing out the word impeachment at the president if he tries to enact gun control through executive order. are you surprised by the intensity of bipartisanship, the bickering that you're seeing as an eyewitness in your freshman year so far? >> well, you know, thomas, addressing the bickering and the hyper partisanship, that has been something that i mean to do and i've said that. in fact, my republican counterpart, the president of the freshman republicans, congressman luke messer from indiana and i, have announced to the class that we intend to schedule a get-together for all of the 84 freshmen congressmen so that we can start to address that bickering, the hyper partisanship. it was about 50 years ago this year that president john f. kennedy said let us not seek the republican answer, let us not seek the democratic answer, let's seek the right answer. i think that still rings true 50 years later. >> do you think that the president should circumvent you and congress on any type of gun control legislatio

his gun safety measures. texas rep steve stockman issued the warning yesterday saying he will introduce articles of impeachment if obama uses executive order to keep guns out of the hands of criminals. stockman claims a use of that power by the president would be unconstitutional and an existential threat to the nation. this is not the first time he's taken a controversial stance on guns. during his first term in the house, his office was slow to turn over a letter to the fbi that appeared to contain evidence about the oklahoma city bombings. last week, he proposed a repeal of all gun-free zones in schools. it looks like president obama might have to issue executive order if he wants anything done on gun control. joe biden's task force will likely propose a ban on high-capacity clips and on assault weapons but majority leader harry reid says something like that might pass the senate but he doubts it has any chance of passing the house. state governors though are making some progress on new gun laws. new york's andrew cuomo and other lawmakers from the state reached a deal
